NGK Reports Fire at NAS Battery Plant (Fourth Report)

After a fire which took place on February 7 from one unit of battery module during its withstand voltage test in a NAS (sodium sulfur) battery factory at the premises of the Komaki Plant (Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture), NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (President & CEO: Shun Matsushita; Head Office: Nagoya, Aichi, Japan), with Fire Authority's instructions, has been striving to determine the cause and to discuss and take preventative measures.
The NAS battery factory has been partly operating, but is now officially permitted to resume its full operation because its testing facilities have passed the Fire Authority's inspection.
The cause of the fire turned out to be a defect in assembling interior insulating members of the battery module during its production. In order to prevent this kind of fire from happening again, NGK has reviewed an assembly process, added an inspection process, and improved its fire prevention measures.
We would like to take this opportunity to apologize profusely for any concern and inconvenience caused by this fire, and are determined to make every efforts for safe operation from now on.
