Natural mineral spring water called "RYUSENDO NO MIZU" produced by Iwaizumi Public Industrial (Director General: Kyouji Yaegashi, Town Mayer of Iwaizumi), an incorporated association in Iwate prefecture, was awarded the highest rank of grand gold medal at Monde Selection® --- the World Selection 1999 . To produce "RYUSENDO NO MIZU", NGK's precision filtering system with ceramic membrane filters is utilized.
Monde Selection, an extremely well- and widely-known selection in Europe, started in 1961. It is now supervised by the EU and its administrative office is located in Brussels, Belgium. At the selection, stringent evaluations including scientific and technological analysis and inspection, and tasting are conducted. Only the products, which obtain more than 95 out of the maximum rating of 100, win the honor of the grand gold medal. "RYUSENDO NO MIZU" was awarded such a prestigious prize for its first entry. The prize awarding ceremony was held on June 21, 1999 in Brussels.
"RYUSENDO NO MIZU" is alkalescent mineral water which has long been filtered through the limestone formation of the Ryusendo, one of Japan's three greatest limestone caves. Taking advantage of the fact that the underground water of the Ryusendo was selected as Japan's Top 100 waters, the water was commercialized in 1985 by the name of "RYUSENDO CHITEIKO NO MIZU", which means "the underground lake water of Ryusendo". In 1996, the water was renamed "RYUSENDO NO MIZU", which means "the water of Ryusendo". Compared with other mineral water in Japan, "RYUSENDO NO MIZU" contains an outstanding amount of calcium and also plenty of other minerals.
When Iwaizumi Public Industrial constructed a new water production plant called "Mineral House" in 1991, NGK shipped a precision filtering system employing NGK's ceramic membrane filters. The membrane filter called "Cefilt®", which possesses the ceramic properties of high heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and durability, is widely used for precision filtering. For instance, Cefilt is utilized to eliminate bacteria in pharmaceutical products and food, such as mineral water, draft beer, sake, and wine. It is also employed for NGK's home-use water purifier, "Cefil®". The porous ceramic membranes completely filter out impurities such as micron-size particles and bacteria; however, they can retain minerals which are indispensable for the good and mild taste of the water. In addition, since filtration does not include heat treatment, it is possible to keep the natural taste of the water untouched.
Iwaizumi Public Industrial attributes the award at this time to the highly evaluated unique characteristic of "RYUSENDO NO MIZU", which is that the water retains its mild taste in spite of containing ingredients of hard water. Thanks to the award, the sales for "RYUSENDO NO MIZU" in June this year increased by 40% from June last year.
